"The Best Runners ever to run in Central Iowa"
The 20th Drake Relays Marathon added a new feature, a 10 Kilometer. This was not
to be a normal 10 km, it was to be the best Iowa has ever seen. After an experimental
1988 first year, the race got serious inviting athletes from throughout the world.
Almost $80,000 was offered in prize money the next four years with $23,000 offered
in 1991 alone. While the weather never did the race any favors, the times were spectacular.
The 10 kilometer did have its critics, some saying it took away from the marathon,
it did. Others quietly pointed out the course went downhill, it did and runners loved
it. What follows is a too brief history and records of the greatest 10 kilometer
in Iowa history.
In 1988 Bill Rodgers and Priscilla Welch graced the inaugural race. The race was
accommodated in the stadium, with thousands of relay fans in attendance but this
created a late start (11:45 a.m.). Hometown favorite, Mike Carney, easily won in
30:36 and former ISU runner Suzanne Youngberg turned in an excellent 34:58. Bill
Rodgers, 40, ran 33:52 and Pricilla Welch, 43, clocked a 35:30.
In 1989 the action really heated up. A stadium start again, late in the morning was
greeted by 45 degree weather and windy, it didn't stop the "good times".
Yobes Ondieki blazed to a 27:46, unbelievable. Yobes a few years later was the first
runner ever to break 27 minutes at 10 km on the track. Behind Yobes were 18 men breaking
30 minutes - what a field of runners. The women's race was just as impressive with
Janis Klecker scoring a 32:10 edging probably Iowa's best female runner ever, Nan
Doak-Davis. 11 women broke 35 minutes.
In 1990 the race had outgrew the stadium start so it started on Forest Street adjacent
to the stadium with a normal mid-morning start. This was a race to the finish with
a large pack still in contention with less than a mile to go. Ashley Johnson ran
a 28:06 narrowly beating Rodney DeHaven by 2 seconds. Janis Klecker won the women's
title barely beating out Monica Joyce running a 31:44. The mens and women's field
was equally as impressive as the previous year although the weather was colder -
a reasonable day for running but not for sitting in the stands at the Relays.
In 1991 the race had good weather and almost reached 2000 runners. But it seems that
big time racing was catching on throughout the US, prize money was almost becoming
the norm ($100,000 given out at Iowa races alone the previous year). Never-the-less
the Drake 10 kilometer continued to be something special as Rafael Zepeda won in
28:15. Libbie Johnson broke Janis Klecker's 2 year streak beating Janis by 11 seconds
while running a 32:12.
In 1992 it was apparent this might be the last year of big time money. The strain
of putting on an Iowa favorite, the Drake Relays Marathon, along with a national
class 10 kilometer was just too much for everyone. Nicely winners from opposite sides
of the globe won, Australian Sean Wade ran a 28:45 and Russian Inna Poushkariva ran
a 32:42.
The Drake Relays 10 Kilometer was fun. International as well as local runners got
to rub shoulders and speed to personal records. It was broadcast live, every minute
of it locally. It was a short lived race that made a transition for the road races
at the Drake Relays. The following year, 1993, the marathon at 25 years called it
quits too. The 10 kilometer and marathon are as different as night and day but their
stories have lived on for years. Fortunately the road races of Drake did not die
completely, they started a new 8 kilometer and half-marathon that combined forces
to be called the Drake Relays On-the-ROADS.
