MVC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
DRAKE'S WILBERTS WINS MVC INDIVIDUAL CROSS COUNTRY TITLE
Ankeny, Iowa - Drake senior Brent Wilberts (Shoreview, Minn.) won the individual
title in the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Cross Country Championships Saturday
at the Otter Creek Golf Course.
Wilberts covered the 8,000-meter race in 24 minutes 5 seconds, while becoming the
first Drake runner to win the MVC men's individual title since Jason Lehmkuhle in
1999. But Wilberts said he would gladly trade the individual title for the team title.
The Bulldogs finished second in the MVC men's team race for the second straight year
with 81 points, while Northern Iowa won the team championship with 43 points.
"Coming into today, I would have rather won the team title than win the individual
race," said Wilberts. "I have been with this group (teammates) the last
three years and we were working hard to win the team championship."
The Panthers had three runners finish in the top 10.
Wilberts opened up a 25-meter lead at the 3,000-meter race and won the race by 60
meters over Northern Iowa's Velibor Radojevic who was timed in 24:20.
"The pace went out a little slower than I expected and I was surprised to find
myself alone at the 3,000-meter mark. I was going to wait until the 5,000-mark to
make my move. It is an adjustment running by yourself but you still need to run hard
and keep the lead. I was worried about maintaining, if not quickening the pace."

FRESHMAN LEADS DRAKE WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM AT MVC MEET
ANKENY, IOWA - Freshman Ashley Anklam (Bloomington, Minn.) finished 33rd, while
the Drake women's cross country inished 10th in the Missouri Valley Conference
Women's Cross Country Championships at the Otter Creek Golf Course Saturday.
Anklam covered the 5,000-meter race in 19 minutes 12 seconds. Drake junior Dolly
Butz (Fond du Lac, Wis.) was 42nd in 19:36.
Southwest Missouri State defending its team title in the women's division with 29
points by having three runners finish among the top five. The Lady Bears scored 29
points to outdistance second-place Southern Illinois which tallied 73 points.
Indiana State senior Jessica Crowder won the individual 5,000 meter race in 17:09.
Southwest Missouri State junior Casey Owens, who was the defending champion, placed
second in 17:26.
Crowder set an Indiana State school record and became the first Indiana State runner
to win the MVC individual title since Amy Cohee in 1993. Ironically, that race was
run on the same Otter Creek Course.
"It was cold and I was actually numb during some of the race," said Crowder.
"My plan was to take the lead after the 3K mark and get as far away from Casey
Owens (defending champion Southwest Missouri State) as possible. I don't like to
sprint at the end. The course was nice there was just one big hill but I tackled
it surprisingly."
