2003 - 1 Mile Race - We apologize! 10K race results below!

So that some of you will know what actually happened at the 1 mile race this year here is the best we can figure out.

We had planned on starting the 10K race first, then after they had circled the church, starting the 1 mile. This would solve the proiblem of the 1 milers intersecting the race on the way out or on the way back.

There was to be a person who after helping start the 10K race would immediately go to the finishline area and start the 1 mile. He is the Drake Relays Road Races Race Director and was to gather the group, go over the course with them and then start them on their way. During that time other individuals (also at the 10K start) were to go to the turn around and other points on the 1 mile course where runners might have needed course directions. Had this happened, the 1 mile race would have gone off smoothly (as it did last year).

A person who's responsibility it was to help at the finishline tried to help. He thought that the one milers were supposed to start first. And he started them. He made a mistake.

Once the race was started there was no turning back. He was the only official present. We (at the 10K) had no way of knowing that we needed to stop things. This individual feels very badly for his error, and all we can do is apologize for the mix up and be happy that no one was injured by this mistake.

If you were in the mile race we have you entered in the computor data base. You all got your long sleeve 25th year t-shirts and we hope you all participated in at least some of the other festivities. We would be happy to give you a complimentary entry into the 2004 Living History Farms Race. You may choose to run either race, 10K or 1 mile, and we would hope that you would have a more typical LHF experience. We have not had this problem in the past.

We (the race commitee) will be happy to discuss other options with those who don't feel that this is satisfactory.

I have been involved in this race since it's inception and the race director since 1984. It is not something that we are proud of and we WILL see to it that it doesn't happen again.

Please forgive us!

Steve Bobenhouse, Race Director
