A great time was had by all who participated in the first Cavalry Charge 5K Run and Walk held in conjunction with The John Wayne Birthday Celebration in Winterset Iowa May 28, 2011. The course started at the John Wayne statue, circled the courthouse square, included the city park , the covered and stone bridges, and ending at the statue again, all led by the Cavalry on horses flags flying. The runners were honored to have General Armstrong Custer present them with their awards.

Eight states were represented by sixty seven finishers. The first three men finishers were from Winterset. C.J. Michael ran the 3.1 miles in 19:08 for first followed closely by Mike Wells with the same time. Hunter Hilsabeck was third overall and first in his age group with a time of 20:02.

Rachel Lester, West DesMoines, cross the finish line first for the women in 21:14, followed by two Winterset women, Dominique Fleming 23:44, and Heidi Dorrell 23:52.

The youngest to participate were Winterset’s Nate and Ethan Suddarth ages 7. The oldest to run was a couple from Lafayette, CO., David and Elizabeth Leistikow, 68 and 69 who both finish first in their age group in 30:47 and 32:26.

In the 5K Walk competition, Jane Dawson from Winterset was first walking the distance in 43:39 followed by Winterset’s Shari Bush in 47:00. Kathleen Downes from Chicago was third in 48:57.

The event was a fund raiser for Wildwood Hills Ranch, and Healthy Kids Imitative who will each receive over $1000. The Madison County Health Care System and the Winterset Rotary Club were major sponsors who want to thank the 10 other sponsors who without their support this event would not be as successful. Sponsors were The Madisonian, Curves, Edward Jones-Mark Pearson, Lanny’s Autos, Madison County Medical Associates, Mahle, Montross Pharmacy, Take Shape For Life, Union State Bank, and The Shopper.
